Results of poll: Best color in the Scars of Mirrodin?

Hey,

The results of the poll of the best color in the Scars of Mirrodin are closed.  43 people voted, but only 1 color rose from the top.  The color that people feel is the strongest in the new set is...

ARTIFACT

I realize it's not an official color, but brown tops it for the best color at 17 votes.  It's no surprise since Scars of Mirrodin throws back to the original Mirrodin set, notorious for degenerate plays with the affinity for artifacts mechanic.

Just to illustrate my point with artifacts:  Wurmcoil Engine

It's a great finisher for any color, providing both lifelink and recovery from most removal in one colorless package.  Deathtouch is a moot point considering it has 6 power, more than enough to eliminate most creatures.  It's there for flavor purposes though when the wurm "uncoils".

The most popular "official" color is white with black and red following up.

I like white in this set.  White has a balance of cheap, efficient weenies that get powered up by equipment and metalcraft as well as powerful control cards.  Of the white cards in Scars, my favorite is Dispense Justice.  It reminds me of Wing Shards and Resounding Silence from previous sets.

Black receives both powerful infect cards with Ichor Rats and Hand of the Praetors and powerful control with Memoricide, Skinrender, and Grasp of Darkness.  Black can easily meld with another color to Does it have enough power to stand alone (think monoblack control)?  I'll have to revisit the topic at a later date.

Red receives good utility cards such as Tunnel Ingus for fetchlands and Galvanic Blast for removal.  Assault Strobe is the centerpiece of many decks and has even spawned a new archetype centered around Kiln Fiend and cheap instants/sorceries.

Blue and green are in last place.  Compared to previous sets, blue is not as strong.  The primary excitement behind blue is the proliferate keyword and a new theft spell with Volition Reins.  Note that proliferate is not exclusive to blue -- both Contagion Engine and Contagion Clasp are artifacts that can proliferate.  Besides that, the only card I see with potential is Riddlesmith.  I see it fitting in a deck with a ton of artifacts to provide a great draw engine.

I won't spend too much time on green, but keep an eye out for Putrefax.  It puts players halfway to death via poison and can kill in one turn with Assault Strobe or Electropotence.

Overall, I think the main influence of the results is the niche these cards have in current decks.  Keep in mind that with the introduction of Scars comes the departure of the Alara block (and specifically cascade).  If the cards provide an easily exploit in a current metagame deck (for example, Sunblast Angel with Gideon Jura), then players are quick to hype them up.  However, cards which need some experimentation are less likely to be picked up by players.

Here are the official results in both graphic and text form:

Best color in Scars of Mirrodin?
Red - 5 votes, 11%
Blue - 3 votes, 6%
Black - 6 votes, 13%
Green - 3 votes, 6%
White - 9 votes, 20%
Artifact - 17 votes, 39%

Stay tuned for the next poll!

Until then,
