Using Maga, Traitor to Mortals as an EDH general

Hey all,

Enter the world of Elder Dragon Highlander.  In short, EDH is a casual format encouraging players to create big decks of singletons (excluding basic lands) with a general providing sideline support.  The format is great for players who want unique play experiences for each game and enjoy delving into the realms of the color they plan to use.

I'm not going to cover the basics of the format, so I'll leave that to this rules page.

On to Maga.

The goal of a Maga deck is to build up enough mana to oneshot your opponent with Maga's enter the battlefield ability. While Maga's ability counts as life loss, there are still ways around it. Keep an eye out for these cards:

  • Runed Halo
  • Solitary Confinement
  • True Believer
These cards will grant your opponent shroud, preventing your opponent from being the target of Maga's ability.

Fortunately, they are all white cards.  If you're not playing against an EDH with white in it, then you have nothing to worry about.  The bad side is that 2 out of 3 of them are enchantments, and pure black has no way to deal with them.

There are 3 ways to deal with enchantments in black:  discard, removal from deck, and artifact removal.

I'll focus on the artifact removal for now.  Black naturally has no way to deal with enchantments, so it must step into the artifact realm to remove enchantments on the battlefield.  Oblivion Stone and Nevinyrral's Disk are the main options, but don't forget about All is Dust (not an artifact, but still helps).

Also, don't forget about using Sadistic Sacrament to remove threats before they have a chance to come into play.

In addition, keep an eye out for counterspells.  To counter those, utilize the massive amount of mana you create to force your opponent to discard them or put them back in your opponent's deck. Options include:
  • Head Games
  • Mind Twist
  • Mind Shatter
Protection for your combo aside, you still have tons of slots for your mana production engine.  Here are some cards from the artifact side:
  • Thran Dynamo
  • Gilded Lotus
  • Grim Monolith
  • Voltaic Key
  • Candelabra of Tawnos
  • Gauntlet of Power
  • Extraplanar Lens
In addition, black has ways to create tons of mana.  Stay away from rituals since they'll place you at a disadvantage.  One tip of the format is to "not put all your eggs in one basket", so look to these cards for doubling your mana:
  • Nirkana Revenant
  • Cabal Coffers
That covers the fundamentals of a Maga deck.  The rest of the deck is standard black power, like tutors and life drain.  I've come up with a sample list of 90 cards with 10 free slots for you to put whatever you may need.  Have a favorite black creature?  Stick him in.  A trump card for your playmates?  Stick that in.

Without further ado, here's the list:

10 x [free slots]
1 x Sadistic Sacrament

1 Gatekeeper of Malakir
1 Fleshbag Marauder
1 Barter in Blood
1 Shriekmaw
1 Avatar of Woe
1 Visara, the Dreadful

1 Ashes to Ashes
1 Phthisis

I stayed away from too much power such as Necropotence and Vampiric Tutor, so if your group's cool with those cards, definitely put them in.

Deckwise, the deck has a heavy focus on mass removal rather than targeted removal.  Just let the opponent overextend his board, then remove the cards.  You'll usually win in one turn, so it doesn't matter how low your life goes as long as the opponent loses first.

Also note that this deck was made for the intentions of one-on-one highlander.  If you play against multiple players at the same time, feel free to explore multiplayer cards such as Syphon Mind and Syphon Soul.

Otherwise, give it a shot and have fun killing your opponent in one turn.

Until next time,
