Is it possible for Swords to Plowshare to return in M2011?

Hey all,

As the release of the M2011 core set of Magic the Gathering nears, people are speculating what cards will be reprinted in the new set.

Typically, cards that are printed in Core Sets are both iconic and relevant to the color slice they represent. Recent examples include red's Lightning Bolt, a classic way to deal damage, and Jace Beleren, a blue planeswalker who both draws and mills cards.

Lightning Bolt
When you think of red, you thinking of Lightning Bolt

White has removal with benefits, including Afterlife, Last Breath, and the recent Path to Exile.

I'll focus on Path to Exile for a bit.  Removing a creature from the game is HUGE.  That means no reanimation tricks, no bonuses for being in the graveyard.  It's gone.

The downside is that your opponent gets to accelerate and fix his mana by searching for a basic land.

More mana = more possible plays for an opponent.  Against a combo deck, it can give them just enough to pull off that game winning maneuver.

More mana really matters in the early game.  Late game, not so much.

That hasn't stopped players from playing it though.

Life is a better option to give to your opponent.  There are significantly less cards which utilize life than utilize mana.  Hence, you'll be giving your opponent less options to use.  Life gain will also give your opponent a bit more staying power, but that won't matter if your win is inevitable.

It's been seen before.  Here it is:
Swords to Plowshares
StP is one of the icons of white.

While Swords to Plowshares hasn't been reprinted in any recent Magic the Gathering sets, it remains popular in the Legacy format as removal.

I think the card has potential to be in M2011.  Here's why:

1. Swords to Plowshares is not on the reserved list.  The reserved list states that any card on it cannot be reprinted.  An elaboration on that statement plus the list itself can be found here: Magic the Gathering reserved list

2. Lightning Bolt was reprinted.  It hasn't broken Standard or Extended.

3. Power creep--creatures have gotten stronger, and StP hasn't changed since yesteryear. Removal needs to creep at the same time as creatures so that aggro doesn't dominate a format.  The closest card to StP is Path to Exile, and that has been fine across formats.

4. The black wannabe StP has returned:

Vendetta

This card was awesome back in the day when the only creatures who had high toughness in relation to their mana cost were walls with few exceptions.  Nowadays, there are low cost, high toughness creatures (Rhox War Monk in particular) which make this junky.

StP targets power though.

Also note that the power creep is not exclusive to toughness.

See Leatherback Baloth and Woolly Thoctar.

Seeing the near polar opposite of Swords to Plowshares could be a foreshadowing of StP.

So what do you think?

Does Swords to Plowshares have a chance to return?  Or will we have to sit on Oust and Path to Exile?

  1. I think we have to sit on Oust and Vendetta in Std and Path to Exile in Ext. Although power-level-wise StP would be absolutely fine, I really doubt that the will ever reprint them outside of a theme deck.
