Stoneforge Mystic Review

With Worldwake primed for play in the current Standard, cards that were hyped before the release can now be tested. As predicted, Jace the Mind Sculptor is making impact a great impact on Standard (Grixis decks) and Extended (Conley Woods' GP Oakland Deck).  Despite its extensive power and mythic status, Abyssal Persecutor is not making much of an impact.

However, there is one card that has been sneaking into top decklists, including the aforementioned Conley deck:

The first thing to note that this card is only as good as the equipment card pool available.  In Standard, Behemoth Sledge and Sigil of Distinction were the only two commonly seen equipments.  Fortunately, Worldwake provided a partner to Sledge and Sigil.

While Basilisk Collar lacks the +2/+2 and lifelink giving of Behemoth Sledge, it trades off those abilities for deathtouch.  The deathtouch works better for first strikers such as White Knight in taking down opposing creatures.

Both choices can be seen in a recent deck that placed 1st in an online tournament.  Mystic WW by Cornodope utilizes 2 Behemoth Sledges, 1 Basilisk Collar, and 2 Sigil of Distinction as equipment for a White Weenie deck.  To search for those creatures, the deck contains 4 copies of Stoneforge Mystic.

What does this do?  By minimizing the amount of equipment in the deck, Stoneforge Mystic allows the creature threat density to increase.  After all, what good is equipment when there is no creature to wield it?

In Extended, there is more viable equipment to choose from.  I would say these are the best options:

The equipments speak for themselves here.  While these cards were selected because of their universal usage, I'd like to point out that Sunforger is another good choice, giving a 4-power boost as well as tutoring out Lightning Helix, Lightning Bolt, and Punishing Fire.

Equipping equipment is even better in Extended because of two aggressively-costed creatures:

The original "troll-shroud" and its partner in crime can wield equipment without fear of targeted removal.

In addition, double strikers can be used with equipment effectively; double the damage, double the Jitte counters, double the fun.

One commonality to notice that between Stoneforge Mystic, the troll-shroud creatures, and the double strike creatures is that they R/G/W.  Its possible to create a RGW zoo deck with some of the above creatures, the equipment, and other staples like Qasali Pridemage, Loam Lion, and Wooly Thoctar.

In short, this is why Stoneforge Mystic is a good card:
  • Tutors for any equipment to hand
  • Guaranteed to replace itself unless hindered by Mindlock Orb or Aven Mindcensor
  • Provides a 1/2 body
  • Can put into play said equipment if left unremoved
  • Cheap at 1W
  • Allows less redundant copies of equipment to be run, increasing creature threat density
  • Small, but great equipment pool in both Standard/Extended
But don't take my word of it.  Here's Conley Woods covering his deck with some remarks on the singleton Stoneforge Mystic.
